What are Vibrams?
Vibram Fivefingers are a barefoot running shoe featuring a foot shaped sole and individual toe compartments meaning they literally fit your feet like a glove. The sole is made of tough, hard wearing Vibram rubber to avoid any sharp or hazardous objects coming into contact with the bottom of your foot.
I own two pairs of Vibram Fivefingers (the Classic and the Bikila) and I absolutely love them! The classics are my gym training shoes and the Bikila are either used for the gym or for running. These shoes have seen me through every gym session for the last two years and I absolutely swear by them. They’ve served me well during many different activities from heavy squats to running a half marathon and even playing full court basketball!
What’s good about them?
Vibrams are the closest thing you can get to working out barefoot (the soul is only 3.5mm thick!). Don’t be put off by the lack of any support, the key thing is that the sole is so thin that it’s impossible to roll over on your ankle. I have always been prone to ankle injuries and have had no ankle problems or injuries wearing these shoes in two years.
The lack of cushioning and support forces the muscles in your foot to adapt and become stronger. A stronger base to the rest of your body can never be a bad thing. The current Mr Olympia, Phil Heath uses these shoes for training and if they’re good enough for him they should be good enough for you!
Best Place to Buy?
Vibram Fivefingers are available from the Vibram website but it’s possible to get a better deal from Amazon. I highly recommend these shoes for any kind of fitness training and cannot see myself using anything else in the future. If you’re looking for a new pair of functional gym shoes and want to try something different then give these a try!
