The best thing you can do is live a healthy lifestyle which will both minimise your chances of getting ill as well as helping you fight off infections more quickly. There are several ways you can prevent yourself from getting sick and speed up your recovery when you do get unwell.

1. Get more sleep

Sleep deprivation suppresses the immune system which makes you more likely to get sick and increases the time it takes you to recover. Aim to get 8 hours of quality sleep each night, make sure your room is nice and dark and silence any distractions such as a mobile phone.

2. Get more vitamins

Eating a diet high in fruit and vegetables will ensure your body has all the vitamins and minerals it needs to keep the immune system functioning efficiently. A multivitamin can also help with this but it is better to get vitamins from whole food sources.

3. Don’t smoke or drink

Both smoke and drink will reduce your body’s ability to fight infections and leave you more likely to get sick.

4. Keep it clean

As simple as it sounds, making sure you wash your hands often and cook food thoroughly will kill any bacteria and stop you from getting sick.

5. Exercise regularly

Regular exercise helps to maintain a healthy body composition and low blood pressure. Both of these things are beneficial to the body as a whole and this includes the immune system.
