When it comes to appearance based fitness goals, a solid fitness diet plan is one of the most important but also one of the most difficult factors to get right. These five tips will take you through the process of sorting out a nutrition plan that works for you to take some of the guesswork out of your nutrition.

1. Start Tracking Your Nutrition

Practice makes perfect, start now and become a nutrition expert

A good first step in perfecting your diet is to start tracking what you are eating currently so that you know where you’re starting from. Get yourself a good calorie counting app such as ‘MyFitnessPal‘ and start tracking everything you eat as well as your weight day to day for about a week. This will not only give you a good baseline to start from but will get you into the swing of things in terms of tracking your nutrition.

2. Get a Set of Personalised Nutrition Targets

Start aiming for a set of numbers which really work

You can get a great set of nutrition targets for your current fitness goal by using our nutrition calculator. You can then compare your diet to the ideal nutrition targets from the calculator and highlight areas which you need to make changes to. For example, if you’re trying to lose weight and the nutrition calculator tells you to decrease your caloric then that’s probably a sensible suggestion!

3. Refine your Nutrition Targets Based on your Progress

Keep yourself heading in the right direction and be self-correcting

Stick to your recommended nutrition targets for a period of 1-2 weeks then assess your progress and make changes to your diet accordingly. For example, if your goal is to gain weight but you’re not seeing an increase on the scales then you may want to increase your calories. Make small changes to your diet, increase or decrease your calories by around 100-200kcal at a time. Don’t go nuts and start adding in 1000 extra calories at once! Getting your nutrition right is like pouring a glass of water -if you start making drastic changes you’ll either end up with an empty glass or a huge spill!

4. Hit your Nutrition Targets with Healthy Food Choices

There’s no point looking good if you’re unhealthy

Hitting your nutrition targets should ensure that you make at least some progress towards your fitness goals. If, however, you want to make the best possible progress and more importantly maximise your health then you should hit those nutrition targets with good food choices.
